Modular homes, also known as prefabricated or systems-built homes, are buildings that are fabricated piecewise inside of a factory setting. After manufacturing, the modular pieces are brought to their destination and assembled on the home buyer’s site. They are completely manufactured indoors, reducing building time by eliminating weather delays, and are finished within a few weeks. They are built within strict guidelines and building codes determined by local, state, and federal governments, and typically exceed on-site housing standards. Modular homes are typically much more affordable than traditional housing due to their shorter build times, concurrent inspection during manufacturing, and energy efficiency. Modular homes differ from so-called manufactured or mobile homes in that, once a modular home is placed on a foundation, it cannot be moved easily. They are permanent residencies that prioritize ease of construction over portability and are regulated with different laws than those of mobile homes.
